Cotopaxi, Ecuador Trek 2023

Posted: Jan 23, 2023

Sir Edmund Hilary once remarked: it’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.

In Avela Foundation’s case, it goes even further. When we lace up our boots for yet another grueling mountain trek we don’t only dig deep within ourselves but we dig deep for the thousands of young burn survivors in South Africa who so desperately need our help. Burn injuries are the third most common external cause of fatal injuries among children up to the age of 15 years.

We are soon to embark (May 26th) on another challenging hike, this time the goal is to plant our flag on top of Cotopaxi. Cotopaxi is an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains. Cotopaxi is considered the second-highest summit in Ecuador, reaching a height of 5,897 meters (19,347 feet).

And we are doing this to raise funds for the Umatter PROGRAMME!

The U matter support programme ensures that no burns survivor in South Africa should ever have to recover alone.

U matter is designed to bring affected communities together for their common good by embracing uniqueness, cultivating dignity, and empowering them by building bridges and connecting people to resources.

In collaboration with our trusted friends and partners at Smile Foundation we have proudly planted our flag on the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, on 23 June 2019. A year before that, Team Avela’s first mountain challenge was to reach Everest Base Camp. Another mission accomplished!
